Happy National Coffee Day! Actually, happy day before national coffee day! I wanted you to be able to prep for celebrating tomorrow morning. You’re probably halfway through your Monday-morning coffee right now, procrastinating at work and wishing fancy coffee drinks were cheaper and healthier. I have another solution for you!
Now, it’s no secret that I love coffee:

And I generally love it black, rich, and very strong. But sometimes it’s fun to change it up a bit. I was playing around one day with some of the plenitude of Chemex coffee I always keep in my fridge, and found a substitute for one of the priciest classic Starbucks drinks: the Skinny Frappuccino.
- Put 5 parts ice, 3 parts coffee, 1 part milk (any kind) and a tablespoon of brown sugar (brown is so much richer than white) in a blender.
- Blend until smooth, about 30 seconds depending on the blender and the amount of ice.
Pour into a glass with a straw and enjoy! Bonus points if you have a really fat straw.
But with this recipe, you have total control. The sugar has 51 calories, and the milk has however many you want! If you’re feeling indulgent, use cream (104 cals/oz). If not, use skim milk (10 cals/oz) or flavored milk substitute (15-20 cals/oz). Totally up to you. Also, this costs a few cents, versus $5 in the store… just food (or coffee) for thought.
- 5 parts ice
- 3 parts coffee
- 1 part milk
- Tbsp brown sugar
- Put all ingredients in a blender. Blend until smooth.
