The Carolina Hurricane: A drink for hockey fans

Posted on Posted in Recipes

IT’S FINALLY HOCKEY SEASON!  Everything just feels wrong during the summer when there’s no hockey to watch (other than prospect camps and pre-season games and Stanley Cup celebrations and training camp and all the other leagues like the brand-new NWHLGo Pride!!).  In celebration of the opening night of the Carolina Hurricanes season (the most important season of the year), I decided to make a mixed drink.  Now, the “Carolina Hurricane” already exists at the bar across the street from the arena, but it’s a rum-based slushy drink, and that is very much not appealing to me.  So I decided to go a different route, with something that seems southern with a slight influence from the wintery North for good luck.

Ingredients:

  • 2 oz Bourbon
  • 2 oz fresh squeezed grapefruit juice
  • 1/2 oz maple syrup
  • Splash of club soda
  1. Turn on the Canes game.
  2. Combine the first three ingredients in a shaker full of ice and shake violently for about 20 seconds.  Pour into a martini glass and top with a splash of club soda.
  3. Cheer on the Canes in the classiest way possible.

Don’t worry, I washed the earrings before putting them on.

Now, this is not at all the traditional cocktail ratio.  In fact, there’s not even a second source of alcohol like a liquor or vermouth.  But the bourbon (southern) and the maple syrup (northern) make a very boozy, sweet combination that is not so appealing, unless of course you like southern sweet tea (blech), so lots of grapefruit juice is needed to cut through the sweetness and add a bitter element.  Now that I think about it, a few drops of bitters would probably be really nice… next time!

Go pour yourself this drink and cheer on the Canes for their 2015 Home Opener against the Deadwings.  LET’S GO CANES!
