Murder or cocktails?

Happy Halloween!  In honor of today’s holiday, I created a cousin to the traditional “Brown Derby”, a cocktail made with grapefruit, Bourbon, and honey.  This one adds blood orange (I found one that was particularly “bloody”) for a darker twist- the Blood Derby.  As I’ve said elsewhere, Bourbon takes on sweetness readily, so adjust the amounts of honey and grapefruit to your taste.  I also used a salt-rimmed glass to cut the sugariness, but that’s up to you.

Ingredients (makes 1-2 drinks, depending on how juicy the fruit is):

  • 1 grapefruit
  • 1 blood orange
  • 1-2 teaspoons honey (the higher quality, the better)
  • 2 oz Bourbon
  • Kosher salt
  1. Using a small wedge of one of the fruits, wet the edge of the glass thoroughly.  Cover a plate with Kosher salt and dip the rim of the glass in salt until well-coated.
  2. Juice the two citrus fruits and add juice to a shaker with 4-5 ice cubes.  Add the honey and Bourbon and shake vigorously for 30 seconds.
  3. Pour in to glass and scare the neighbors!
