Are you looking for unique ways to stay hydrated this summer? Water can be a bit boring, which causes many people to not take in enough liquid- not a good idea during hot summer weeks! Try these ideas for some fun summery drinks that will keep you feeling great.
I was never one to jump on the infused-water bandwagon. I always heard health professionals talking about how adding a slice of lemon to your water may make you drink more, but I never shared that experience. However, one night at my best friend’s apartment, I had water that had cucumber and lemon soaking in it overnight, and I couldn’t get enough of it! I finally understood what all those people were talking about– you just have to find what combination of flavors works for you! Use filtered water if yours is anywhere near as nasty as mine is. I can’t even imagine beginning my day without a glass of infused water anymore. It’s a great way to wake up and feel healthy before you even wash your face.
I find that cucumber gives water a luxurious, spa-like taste, but here are some other ideas that I am a fan of:
- Mint and cucumber (or just mint)
- Lemon and cucumber
- Strawberry and lime
- Blueberry and lime
- Strawberry and basil
- Honeydew and cantaloupe
- Pineapple and cantaloupe
- Raspberry and Pear
- Ginger and grapefruit
- Rosemary and strawberry
- Blood orange
- Blackberry and sage or rosemary
- Grapefruit and cucumber
- Peach and blueberry
- Mango and strawberry
There are plenty more ideas out there, but please don’t believe the blabber about “detoxing” and “anti-bloating” and “fat flushing” blends. None of that is possible, but simply being more hydrated will certainly make you feel better.
I bought a 1 liter jug to store my water in, but I’d actually recommend getting a very large mason jar and replacing the lid with a specially made strainer lid to prevent pieces of the fruit from slipping out. These combos will keep flavoring water for about a week if kept submerged in fresh water, so don’t feel the need to toss out pricey ingredients every time you empty the bottle. I haven’t tried it yet, but I imagine frozen fruits would work just as well as fresh.
Another great solution to staying hydrated in a fun way is no-sweetener-added seltzer, like the LaCroix or Polar brands, which have hundreds of rotating flavors to choose from.
For a fun summer dinner accompaniment, prepare a fast sangria with cheap merlot, seltzer, green apple, and citrus. If it’s too tart, add a touch of triple sec or simple syrup to temper the flavor. It is best if it sits overnight!
