Sorry, Jamba Juice.

Sorry, Jamba Juice. You just lost my business.

This past year, I discovered Jamba Juice’s Mango Peach Topper.  It’s fantastic.  It’s like a very thick smoothie (with yogurt) topped with banana slices and surprisingly good granola… but it also costs $6.  Not cool.  Anyway, since I had a lot of dining plan money to use up second semester, I got these (with a side of veggies from Panda Express, the only thing under 3 million and a half calories) for dinner/dessert.  It was the life.  However, I no longer have a dining plan (free at last!) and I still want those toppers!  But I am not, under any circumstance (ok, not any circumstance) shelling out $6 for part of a dinner.

Here’s my solution:

In a blender, mix

  • 2 oz seltzer, OJ, or another liquid of choice
  • 5 ice cubes
  • 1/2 banana (save the other half)
  • 1/2 peach (frozen or fresh)
  • 1 c frozen mango
  • 3 T plain yogurt or silken tofu
Liquid at the bottom helps the blades get moving so that everything else falls into the swirling vortex*
*of doom

Blend until smooth and very thick.  If the blender is stubborn, add a little more liquid.

Pour into a glass or bowl, top with granola (homemade is best, of course- Alton Brown’s recipe is very close to mine… I might share my own.  Maybe.) and the other half of the banana, sliced.

My fantastic smoothie (with leftovers from the other night as my veggie serving)

And the best part– the cost breakdown:

Ice= Free
Selzter= essentially free, I drink it anyway
Banana= $.19
1/2 peach= $.35 (or cheaper if frozen)
1/4 bag of frozen mango= $.67
3 T silken tofu/yogurt= about $.34
Granola, if homemade= about $.50

Total= $2.05 for 16 oz plus toppings (and I have leftover ingredients for another night!)

It tastes EXACTLY like the famed Mango Peach topper.  And I didn’t have to wait in line for 300 hours!
